ABOUT BERLIN

Welcome to Berlin!

Berlin is the capital and largest city of Germany by both area and population.

Berlin straddles the banks of the Spree, which flows into the Havel in the western borough of Spandau. Among the city’s main topographical features are the many lakes in the western and southeastern boroughs formed by the Spree, Havel and Dahme, the largest of which is Lake Müggelsee. About one-third of the city’s area is composed of forests, parks, gardens, rivers, canals and lakes.

Berlin is a world city of culture, politics, media and science. Its economy is based on high-tech firms and the service sector, encompassing a diverse range of creative industries, research facilities, media corporations and convention venues. The city is well known for its festivals, diverse architecture, nightlife, contemporary arts and a very high quality of living. Since the 2000s Berlin has seen the emergence of a cosmopolitan entrepreneurial scene.

Bathing lakes and boat trips

Spree and Landwehr Canal, Müggelsee and Wannsee: Berlin is a green city with many lakes and rivers. This is why Berliners love being near the water above all else. The best way to get to know the Berlin lake landscape is on a boat trip. Or you can sail along directly past the tourist attractions. And even though Berlin is only a stone’s throw away from the sea, you can pack up your bathing suit and travel to one of the many lakes in and around Berlin.

The taste of summer

In summer, life in Berlin happens outdoors – with the first rays of sunshine, the cafés and restaurants set up their tables and chairs on pavements and plazas. Take a seat to relax in the shade of a tree in a Berlin beer garden. Enjoy a spectacular view across the city from the roof decks on summer evenings or spend the evening on the water front.

Add your voice to the calls of “Berlin ahoy!” in the beach bars, your toes in the sand and the Spree at your fingertips. The ice cream parlours offer the most delicious new creations for every new summer season.
